February Book :: Save Me From Myself

This month I started reading Jesus for President by Shane Clairborne. This is a great book about faith, politics, social isssues, and Jesus. However, half way through the book I got side tracked by Save Me From Myself by Brian “Head” Welch. Shane will have to wait - he will be there when I get back.
Save Me From Myself is the story of how Brian Welch left the band KORN because of his life altering experience with Jesus Christ. It explicitly (and he describes in full detail and F-words) shares his experience of being addicted drugs, alcohol, money, and fame until Jesus came and messed everything up. His battle with drugs ends when he finally submits everything to God. He moves with his daughter to Arizona to pursue a new life and mission that he feels God has given him.
The message of the transformed life very powerfully displayed throughout Brian’s journey from Hell to Heaven. God takes a broken shell of a man and redeems him and restores everything that was lost. He is definitely not perfect but his honesty and journey are very inspiring. He released a tamer Christian version which hopefully cuts out some of the explicit content (it’s hard to give Jr. Highers books with the F-word in them).
Overall I would recommend the tame version of this book. It is an amazing story of a life that has been changed by God. If you are a fan of KORN check out his CD.
Here is his story (iamsecond.com)

I read this, I think back in November in like two days. Glory to God for loving us while we are still sinners, even at our worse and pulling us out. This book gave me a lot of Hope not to give up on (lost) people, because the Gospel message can transform anyone, anywhere.
Although I prefer the ‘un-tame’ version personally because it is true to what’s going on in the world apart from Christ.
It would be an interesting discussion: is it really needed to have a ‘tame’ vs. ‘non-tame’ version for Christian Youth. As I am not a youth pastor I do not have that perspective, but my thinking back to growing up in a youth group: I think a lot of things were sheltered or not discussed in youth church thus resuling in people wanting to experiment more or experience this after moving away from church. This is just my personal experience though and would be interestd to hear others perspectives.
God is Amazing!

I agree that we definitely should not shelter youth from the explicit realities of the world. Most of the kids in my youth group face challenges in high school that I never had to deal with. I do not sugar coat life, faith, or the world.
However, I appreciate that they took the F-words and G-strings out of the book not so much for the youth’s perspective but for parents who are very protective and would miss the message based on some explicit dialogue or events. I believe the youth could handle it but I would definitely get negative feedback about handing out a book like that.
I want to share the story without any negative preconceptions about the message or mode of communication.
Now I am just waiting for Eminem to listen to the KJ-52 song and become a christian. That will be a great book.
Thanks for the thoughts Tanner!
